Lay Members

Chivalric Weekend 2012Schüler (Student) – Any person who wishes to study in a MEMAG school may become a Schüler at the discretion of the school’s Instructor. Students may freely take part in classes with any weapon that the Instructor is willing to teach them at the time.

Possible Subjects of Study: Schwert (Longsword), Messer (Longknife), Schwert und Buckellar (Sword and Buckler), Rappier (Rapier), Dolch (Dagger), Ringen (Wrestling), Stangen (Staff), Streitaxt (Pollaxe), Helenbarten (Halberd), Jaegerstock (Double-pointed Spear), Bauern Stangen (Peasant Club), Drueschel (Flail), Sichel (Sickle).

Guild Recognized Members

If a Schüler wishes to have his level of achievement be recognized throughout all the schools of MEMAG, he will begin training as an Apprentice (Lehrling) in his chosen school and follow the curriculum below at the discretion of his instructor. He must meet all qualifications and pass a test on each level before advancing to the next.

Lehrling (Apprentice) – Approximately 2 years of training before advancing

  1. Schwert Syllabus - Early Liechtenauer Tradition and Additional German Sources
    1. Dagger Fundamentals – “Glasgow” Teachings and Additional German Sources
    2. Ringen Fundamentals – “Nuremberg” Teachings and Additional German Sources

Geselle (Journeyman) – Approximately 3 years of training before advancing – Geselle are eligible to become Assistant Instructors (Vorfechtern) at the discretion of the Freifechter or Meister of the school.

  1. Messer Syllabus – Leckuechner Teachings and Additional German Sources
    1. Sword and Buckler Fundamentals – Lignitzer Teachings and Additional German Sources
  1. Stangen Syllabus – Pauernfeindt Teachings and Additional German Sources
    1. Halberd Fundamentals – Various German Sources

OchsFreifechter (Instructor) – Achieved after approximately 5 years total of training and by appointment. The holder of this level of recognition will continue his studies with other weapons at his own discretion, is free to teach at his own school, and may appoint new Instructors who qualify. He may also elect to be tested by the USKDF Federation for the rank of Meister (Certified Teacher) if all qualifications are met.
